Islamabad–Tehran–Istanbul Freight Train to Resume on December 31

The government of Pakistan has announced that the Islamabad–Tehran–Istanbul (ITI) freight train. It will restart operations on December 31, 2025. This train will connect Pakistan, Iran, and Türkiye. And its aim is to improve trade and transport in these 3 regions.

Why the Train Was Delayed  

Federal Minister for  Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi explained that the project was delayed earlier because of:  

• The regional war situation  
• Unfinalized trade arrangements between Pakistan and Türkiye  

He also said the restart depends on which goods will be exported and imported, which trade ministers are currently finalizing.  

History of the ITI Freight Train  

• December 2021: Service restarted and reached Türkiye in January 2022  
• August 2022: Service stopped due to:

  • Poor service quality  
  • Slow customs clearance  
  • High freight charges  
  • Flood damage and the collapse of Hirok Bridge

Future Plans  

Minister Abbasi also said Pakistan is planning a new rail link with Kazakhstan through Chaman. This will improve access to Central Asia and Europe and expand Pakistan’s trade routes.
