Faisalabad is going to improve its water supply system with the help of Japan. A new agreement between Pakistan and Japan will bring smart water meters and better water management to the city. And this is great news for Faisalabad.

Pakistan and Japan Sign Important Agreement

On May 14, 2025, Pakistan and Japan signed an agreement in Islamabad to improve the water supply system in Faisalabad.

Under this agreement, Japan will provide about $3.5 million (around 510 million yen) through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

This support is part of Japan’s Economic and Social Development Program, which focuses on improving public services and infrastructure in developing countries.

8000+ Smart Water Meters in Faisalabad

A major part of this project is the installation of around 8,000 smart water meters in Faisalabad

These smart meters will help in:

  • Measuring actual water usage
  • Replacing the old flat-rate billing system
  • Improving billing accuracy
  • Reducing water waste

Currently, many users pay a fixed bill. But we need to upgrade it, as they just pay for the water they use. This leads to overuse and wastage. The new system will charge people based on real consumption.

Why Faisalabad Needs This Project

Faisalabad is Pakistan’s third-largest city. But it faces serious water supply problems.

According to official information:

  • Water is available for only about 6 hours per day in many areas
  • Old systems and poor revenue collection make it hard to improve services
  • Flat-rate billing reduces incentives to save water

Because of these issues, WASA Faisalabad struggles to upgrade infrastructure and expand supply.

How This Project Will Help

The new system will bring several improvements:

  • Better water distribution
  • Less wastage of water
  • Improved revenue collection for WASA
  • Digital monitoring of water usage

It will also help Faisalabad move toward a meter-based system, which is used in modern cities around the world.

JICA’s Role in Water Development

Japan, through JICA, has been supporting water projects in Pakistan for many years.

For example, earlier projects in Faisalabad included:

  • Improvement of water treatment plants
  • Better pipelines and distribution systems
  • Expansion of clean water access

This new smart meter project is another step toward modern and efficient water management.

A Step Toward Better Water Supply in Pakistan

This project is not just for Faisalabad, it can become a model for other cities in Pakistan.

According to officials, the system will:

  • Improve public health
  • Support environmental sustainability
  • Help achieve global goals like clean water for all

The use of smart water meters in Faisalabad demonstrates how technology and international cooperation can address real-world problems.

Conclusion

The Japan-Pakistan water agreement is an important step. This is working toward improving the water supply in Faisalabad. With 8,000+ smart water meters, improved billing, and enhanced systems. The city is moving toward a smarter and more sustainable future.

If successful, this project could be expanded to other cities, helping solve Pakistan’s growing water challenges.
